What is QoS and how does it work?

Quality of Service, or QoS, presumes that different applications and users have different priority requirements.  Internetworks almost always have this issue because WAN speeds are typically 1/10th or less of the speed of the LANs they interconnect.  Because of this bandwidth disparity, it is important that WAN connections are used efficiently.  TM systems define several QoS priority levels.  Administrators identify what traffic should be assigned to each level.  Network interfaces are assigned bandwidth limits for each level.  To maintain suitable performance when QoS is not implemented, WAN speeds must accomodate peak traffic levels regardless of the kind of traffic.  With QoS, important application traffic can pre-empt low priority traffic to ensure network performance and efficient bandwidth usage.
