What does network load balancing mean?

Titanium Mirror internetwork appliances can load-balance traffic across multiple links to the same destination.  Two examples:

  • Use two business class DSL links to the internet
  • Create a pair of VPN connections to a remote office, each over a separate physical network link

While multiple links can be configured in fail-over mode, the 'backup' link only begins using traffic when the 'primary' link fails.  Instead, most customers choose to use multiple links simultaneously.  In this case, the TM unit load balances traffic, session by session, across the available links.  Using load balancing has several advantages:

  • All links are used, generating the most benefit from your investment
  • A failed link is automatically detected and deactivated
  • A new or recovered link is automatically used

TM products allow load balancing over any two or more route paths, including VPNs.  This means that a pair of VPN links running 'over' separate physical network links provides VPN load balancing and high availability, just like described above.  Learn more about load balancing in the Products section.
